General Stair & Balustrade FAQs

How long does it take to build a custom staircase?

The timeline depends on the design complexity, materials, and site conditions. Most custom stair projects take 1 to 3 weeks from fabrication to installation. Simpler external stairs can often be completed within a few days, while complex interior staircases with custom joinery may take longer.

Outdoor stairs in Queensland need materials that resist humidity, UV exposure, and termites. Popular options include treated hardwood, steel framing, aluminium, and composite decking materials. Hardwood species such as spotted gum or merbau are commonly chosen for their durability and appearance.

Balustrades with correctly spaced vertical balusters and a continuous handrail provide excellent safety for children. Designs must meet spacing requirements to prevent children from passing through the balusters.

In many cases, replacing stairs with the same dimensions does not require council approval. However, structural changes or modifications to height, width, or location may require approval or certification under the QBCC  guidelines.

Many stair issues can be repaired, such as loose treads, worn timber, or damaged handrails. However, stairs that are structurally compromised, severely rotted, or non-compliant with current safety standards are better replaced.

The price varies depending on materials, size, and design complexity. A typical residential stair project in Brisbane may range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more for custom designs. Outdoor utility stairs are usually at the lower end of that range.

Regular maintenance includes sealing exposed timber, repainting when coatings deteriorate, and checking for moisture damage. In Queensland’s climate, timber stairs should generally be sealed or repainted every 3 to 5 years to maintain durability.

Popular styles include straight staircases, L-shaped stairs, floating stairs, and timber stairs with glass balustrades. These designs combine visual appeal with efficient use of space and are commonly featured in contemporary Australian architecture.

Safety improvements can include installing secure handrails on both sides, non-slip stair treads, improved lighting, and consistent step heights. These modifications significantly reduce fall risks.

Timber Staircase FAQs

Why are hardwood stairs better than pine stairs?

Hardwoods are generally stronger and more resistant to dents and wear. Pine is more affordable and suitable for some applications, but hardwood stairs typically last longer and maintain their appearance better over time.

Durable hardwoods such as spotted gum, blackbutt, merbau, and ironbark are commonly used for stairs in Queensland due to their strength, resistance to wear, and attractive grain.

With proper construction and maintenance, timber staircases can last 20 to 40 years or longer. Regular sealing, painting, and inspection will extend their lifespan.

Stair Repair & Replacement FAQs

How do I know if my stairs are unsafe?

Signs include structural movement, severe rot, cracked treads, unstable handrails, or non-compliance with safety standards.

Minor cracks can sometimes be repaired, but heavily damaged treads should be replaced to maintain safety.

Small repairs are usually cheaper, but replacing severely damaged stairs can be more cost-effective in the long term.

Creaking is usually caused by loose joints or movement between stair components. Tightening fasteners or reinforcing the structure often resolves the issue.

It is recommended to inspect stairs annually to check for wear, loose fittings, or structural issues.

Installation & Construction FAQs

How long does it take you to install a new external timber staircase?

Installation typically takes 1 to 3 days, depending on the complexity of the stair design and whether demolition of existing stairs is required.

Preparation usually involves measuring the space, assessing structural supports, ensuring compliance with building regulations, and preparing the installation area for safe construction.

Most stair contractors include removal and disposal of old stairs as part of the project. This ensures the new structure can be installed safely and efficiently.

Reputable builders should hold appropriate licensing and insurance through the QBCC, Queensland Building and Construction Commission. It pays to check that you’re dealing with a licensed builder.
